Awake and Sing! Panel Discussion
Clifford Odets' America: The American Dream Fulfilled
with moderator David Chack,
President of the international Association for Jewish Theatre
Sunday, January 24, 2010
12:30pm at Northlight Theatre
Awake and Sing!, one of the great American plays of the 20th Century, is ironically one of the least known in the American theatre canon. It tells a very human story, tackling the major theme of survival in desperate economic times. But it is also a personal story, demonstrating how a first-generation Jewish American family fights to maintain their pride, ideals, and identity in the face of both external and internal challenges.
This panel will examine the impact of Jewish immigration on America, the Group Theatre and the Method acting system, and the life and work of Clifford Odets, and will feature panelists:
- Robert D. Johnston, Associate Professor and Director of the Teaching of History Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago
- Craig D. Kinzer, Associate Professor Emeritus of Theatre at Northwestern University.
This panel discussion is FREE and open to the public. Space is limited - reservations are required. Reserve your seat today at 847.679.9501 x3555.
