EDUCATION
Northlight Theatre Education Programs
Over the past nine years, we have been developing Northlight’s Education Department, which is built on the belief that constructive self-expression is a key to well-being; that the arts can teach that skill and that it benefits people of any age.  We have several education programs dedicated to children of all ages and have reached over 100,000 students.

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS:
Northlight Theatre Academy
Our popular Northlight Theatre Academy (NTA) offers students (grades 3-12) the opportunity to take theatre classes from professionals, perform in improv comedy and appear on the Northlight stage.  Our Acting, Improv and Technique classes help to build confidence as well as teach acting skills through games, monologue and scene work.  All classes are 8-week sessions. For the advanced actors, we offer the NTA Company, which performs full-length productions on Northlight’s main stage.  An audition and resume are necessary for acceptance into the Company.

Northlight Theatre Camps
Northlight Theatre Camps are for grades 3-9 and culminate in a showcase on the main stage.  We have two 4-week camps that build on the Academy goals and include classes, guest artists, theatre field trips and special pool outings.  We also offer a Summer Audition Workshop where serious acting students can learn skills from area professionals and which culminates in a showcase for agents and casting directors.  This program includes headshots from a professional photographer.

STAR
Our STAR (Student Theatre Arts Resource) program allows 7th-12th graders to attend professional, full-scale productions of Northlight’s exciting 2007-2008 season.  Chicago Public School students see these shows for only $3, suburban and private school students pay $12.  Each teacher receives complimentary tickets to each show prior to the matinee, a copy of the script, a cross-disciplinary study guide and workshops right in their classroom.

The Northlight Theatre Academy educators are also involved in many educational community partnerships:
  • Student workshops are conducted in schools, libraries or activity centers and deal with diversity, conflict/resolution, acting/improv skills, or any specific needs a teacher might request.  We also offer 8-10 week residencies with area schools, museums and Scout troops.  NTA educators will conduct these classes during school or as after-school programs.
  • We also offer teacher training workshops. Two highly trained professionals utilize theatre arts classroom techniques and exercises to explore the various connections that can be made between theatre and the non-arts based classroom and is good for two CPDU credits.
  • We participate in career shadowing days with Niles and Evanston Township High Schools.

Internships
Northlight offers internships for college students who are interested in a career in professional theatre.  Internships are available in directing, literary management, dramaturgy, marketing, development, company management, education, stage management and tech/production.
