My thanks to Tracy Letts for the shout out on his blog on the Steppenwolf website. Yes I am a theatre geek, I admit it. Which reminds me I have to see Betrayal with Amy Morton, Tracy and Ian Barford before it closes at Steppenwolf. Great actors in a great play, how can you ask for more?

I am such a theatre geek, in fact, that after I open Glengarry tonight and tomorrow night here in Atlanta, I come home for 1 day, see a preview of our production of She Stoops to Conquer directed by the excellent Bill Brown, and then fly out to Louisville to attend the Humana Festival. The Humana Festival of new plays allows you to see 6 new plays in 2 and 1/2 days. Candy and I love it, because we are true gluttons for theatre. In London we will see 6 shows in 4 days, and the same is true of our trips to NY. I know, we need help but...its not just a job to me.

Glengarry is going wonderfully. The cast is really hitting their stride and of course the play is brilliant, a killer combination, and the audiences have been giving it standing ovations. I notice that happens more in other cities than in Chicago. Chicago audiences may be tough, but they are true blue theatre- goers.

I just got back from a 36 hour trip to Cedar City Utah where we had day long production meetings for my upcoming production of Twelfth Night. I am very excited to work on this play since it has been 24 years since I did it last at the Great Lakes Shakespeare festival.

It is set in Shakespeare's mythic Illyria which is Albania, and Northern Greece. The costumes will be of an Eastern influence as will the set, since the Ottoman Empire was more or less in control during that period. History is a bit flimsy during that period(1599), so we must do our best. It is an area where pirates ruled and the Muslim faith was growing and heading north and west.

I am including some pictures of the Elizabethan influenced stage in Cedar City. It's charming and I have a terrific cast lined up including old friends Carey Cannon (from Pride and Prejudice and Lady Windermere's Fan at Northlight), and Michael Edwards (who did Rounding Third for me at INTIMAN).

We have our first of two openings tonight here at the Alliance. I am really proud of this cast and all their hard work. Glengarry still has the power to make the audience gasp, and it plays so bitterly funny, in a way that you don't get from the film.

Mamet...that guy can *&!@#$% write.

More anon,
Beej
