Northlight Welcomes New Executive Director
The Northlight Theatre Board of Directors has announced Timothy J. Evans as the new Executive Director of Northlight Theatre.  Evans is expected to begin at Northlight in April, 2007.  He replaces Philip J. Santora, who left in January to assume the position of Managing Director of TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA.

“The Northlight Board of Directors is invigorated by Tim’s appointment and we are thrilled that he will be joining our Northlight family,” says Northlight Board President Trimmy Stamell.  “Throughout his career at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Tim has been an innovative leader, a savvy manager and a valuable member of the Chicago theatre community.  We are confident that Tim, alongside BJ Jones, will continue Northlight’s excellent work and enable the theatre to reach new heights.”

Artistic Director BJ Jones adds, “With Tim Evans as my new partner, Northlight has a seasoned Chicago theatrical veteran with tremendous vision, a breadth of experience, and deep and trusted relationships.  I've known Tim for nearly 15 years and I can't think of a more felicitous opportunity for Northlight or for me.”

“In my many years with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, I have been afforded great opportunities to contribute to the incredible growth of the company, and I am deeply grateful to the all Steppenwolf family, most especially the Steppenwolf ensemble, for our fulfilling years together,” comments Tim Evans.  “I truly look forward to joining the Northlight family, and I’m excited to work in partnership with BJ Jones, its strong Board of Directors and dedicated staff, to continue and heighten the theatre’s long-term success.  I have long admired Northlight’s work on stage and in the community and, most importantly, its artistic leader, BJ Jones.”

Tim has had an almost 30-year relationship with Steppenwolf Theatre Company starting in 1977 as its first business manager, working alongside the founding ensemble members in the basement theatre of a Highland Park Catholic school.  After having produced many productions in Highland Park, Tim spearheaded the move of the company into Chicago to the Jane Adams Hull House Theatre.

In the early 1980s, Tim left the theatre to pursue other interests but remained a member of the board of directors.  He returned to Steppenwolf in 1992 as Director of Audience Development and eventually become Director of Marketing and Communications, a position he served in until 2000 during which time the company’s subscriber base more than doubled.  In 1995, he created and produced Steppenwolf’s Traffic series bringing Chicago Public Radio into its first relationship with Steppenwolf as a broadcast partner.

Tim handled the national press coverage of Steppenwolf’s selection by President Clinton as a 1998 recipient of the National Medal of Arts.  In 2000, he became Director of Special Projects producing the 25th Anniversary Gala hosted by Bill Murray, two television documentaries on Steppenwolf, a highly regarded coffee table book Steppenwolf/Skrebneski with acclaimed photographer Victor Skrebneski, and spearheaded a national media campaign culminating in an four-page photographic spread of the Steppenwolf ensemble in Vanity Fair  by Annie Leibowitz.

Tim founded Steppenwolf Films with the Steppenwolf co-founders in 2001 to develop quality film and television projects under the Steppenwolf brand.  In 2005, he produced and curated the first Traffic Jam festival and the company’s first free Millennium Park performance.  Most recently, Tim became Producer for the Public Square at Steppenwolf, overseeing creative partnerships with other Chicago cultural organizations.

Tim has been an active member of the League of Chicago Theatres, for which he served as Vice President from 1996-1998.  He was a selected member of the Governor’s Task Force for Media Development from 2002-2005 and currently serves on the IFP board of directors. Tim is a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and earned a CBA from the University of Illinois Chicago and the Center for Enterprise Development.
